Para o dia 21 de Março, às 10 h, entre férias das escolas estrangeiras e portuguesas, estamos a organizar uma visita às instalações da fábrica da Joalharia Leitão & Irmão, que se situa no centro de Lisboa, na Travessa da Espera, 8-14 (transversal da Rua da Misericórdia). A visita será limitada a 10 pessoas pois o espaço não é muito grande e a logística complicada de organizar.
Iremos ver a confecção de peças de prata e, noutro espaço, de ouro, por artífices muito especializados, de cujas mãos saem todas as fantásticas obras de arte que depois teremos oportunidade de admirar nas instalações da loja anexa.
A Joalharia Leitão & Irmão data do século XIX, tendo recebido o título de Joalheiros da Coroa. Do seu espólio faz parte uma enorme lista de obras valiosíssimas, entre elas, um cálice oferecido por D. Luís ao Papa Leão XIII, em 1888, e a coroa de Nossa Senhora de Fátima (1942), oferta dos Portugueses em sinal de gratidão por terem sido poupados à Segunda Grande Guerra e resultado de uma campanha nacional de ofertas confiadas à casa Leitão.Em 1984, esta obra ganhou outro relevo quando o Papa João Paulo II ofereceu a Nossa Senhora de Fátima a bala que o atingiu no atentado de 13 de Maio de 1981 no Vaticano. A bala encontrou o encaixe perfeito no espaço vazio, deixado em 1942 na união das oito hastes que constituem a coroa de Rainha.

We are organizing a visit to the Jewellers Leitão & Irmão factory on March the 21st, at 10 o’clock, between Portuguese and foreign schools’ holidays. The factory is in a central part of Lisbon, Travessa da Espera, 8-14 (transversal to Rua da Misericórdia). The visit will be limited to 10 people, since the space isn’t very big and more would be difficult to accomodate.
We will be shown silver and gold pieces being made by specialized craftsmen, from whose hands come the wonderful works of art we will have the opportunity of admiring in the shop.
The Jewellers Leitão & Irmão date from the 19th century, having received the title of “Crown Jewellers”.
In its long history of high quality works, there are some extremely valuable pieces, among them a chalice offered by King Luís to Pope Leo XIII in 1888 and the Crown of Our Lady of Fátima offered by the Portuguese in 1942 as a token of gratitude for being spared from the Second World War. This crown was made from a national campaign of offerings. In 1984 this piece acquired a new meaning when Pope John Paul IIoffered the Virgin of Fátima the bullet that hit him during the assassination attempt of May 13th 1981 in the Vatican. The bullet fitted perfectly in the space left empty in 1942 between the eight coupling rods which encircle the Queen’s Crown.
